Learn more about local history, greet, chaperone and inform Museum guests. Contribute to the development of the Museum’s on premises and online retail store.

Term:Part-time. Employment may be terminated or extended at the will of the VMHA.
Start Date:Trainings begin April 2025
Schedule:Part Time, Mid-April- Mid September. Weekends and some evenings included
Wage:$18.00/hr
Reports to:Museum Services Manager
Employer:The VMHA will contribute to the State Unemployment fund for the employee and will provide Worker’s Compensation to cover the employee in case of a work-related injury.
Position Overview:The Guest Services Specialist provides reception, excellent customer service, makes sales, monitors Museum and conducts light cleaning and may assist Museum Marketing, Services, Collections and Programming with light data entry, content creation, or event set up, as assigned.
Essential Job Functions:Admission, Service, Retail Sales Greet visitors to the Museum in a friendly and courteous manner. Learn and share about the region and local history. Operate Square point-of-sale system including for admissions, retail sales and inventory updates Balance the till at the end of the workday and prepare deposits for the Museum Services Manager. Answer phones, take messages and direct calls. Occasional data entry/updates to inventory or online store. Patrol the Museum to assure security for both visitors and exhibits. Monitor the Museum’s fire and intrusion detection systems and environmental controls. Respond to emergencies (may include calling appropriate agencies or individuals).    
Job Requirements:Friendly demeanor. Excellent customer service skills.   Knowledgeable in Square point-of-sale, Microsoft Outlook and Teams, Instant Messaging Must be familiar with and adhere to the Museum’s employee policies.

Coach Tour Guide

The Valdez Museum and Historical Archive (VMHA) seeks Coach Tour Guides to lead cruise ship passengers and overland groups arriving in Valdez this spring, summer and fall. If you love history and nature, storytelling and public speaking–and meeting people from around the globe, this job will appeal to you. Guides are given training in advance of touring and follow a prescribed route through Valdez and up the Richardson Highway. They narrate the history of the area, step on and off the coach with passengers, and point out the unique natural features of the region that make it so beautiful and memorable.

Position Overview:Tour guide and narrator on coach with cruise ship passengers. Travel on a prescribed route through Valdez and along the Richardson Highway where passengers disembark to explore the surrounding environment. Create place-based experiences while sharing the stories of Valdez and the region. Direct participants’ attention to key sites, natural phenomena, and flora and fauna, that illustrate the unique history, events, geography and cultural expression of the area as seen in evidence.   
  
Essential Job Functions:Helping people who visit become familiar with Valdez and the region: Knowledgeable about Valdez history, it significance, key location and design Knowledgeable about the geography, natural history, flora and fauna of region. Self-starter with the willingness to study and learn the history, etc. of the area on their own, if not already knowledgeableExcellent public speaking skillsAbility to highlight the key points of the tour with ease and in a timely manner Field and answer questions quickly Personable and friendlyPunctual, yet flexible.Stand and speak on moving busFamiliar with using technology, iPadAbility to give clear directions to places of interest Able to interact with people from different backgrounds and those with limited mobility   Helpful, but not necessary Second language knowledge: French, German, Italian, Spanish. American Sign language, etc.   Tour guides will perform the following tasks: Greet tour groups at the Kelsey Dock or other location as requested. Board the coach of tour operator. Embark and disembark coach with groups at various stops Describe places and sites to visitors. Provide directions to visitors.   
Job Requirements:Training requirement. Starting March, 2024, train with Curator of Education & Public Programs to thoroughly understand the tour route, timing, content and delivery.
